Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich
There is something about the simplicity of an Ice Cream Sandwich that takes me back to my childhood, and in my case, growing up during a simpler time in the rural Catskills of New York State. Now as the sweet scene of summer vacation wanes behind us with my own son back in school for Fall, I made one last toast to summer with him by splitting Next Door Eatery's like-totally-awesome ice cream sandwich. The sweet treat starts with locally-made cold & creamy chocolate (or vanilla) ice cream, and is then sandwiched in between 2 house-made gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. It's my favorite cream sandwich in town, and also comes free with a trans-emotional-time-machine back to your childhood too.
Tomato Soup
This simple dish is truly a soul satisfying staple in every sense. So simple, but sooooo delicious is the bright & vibrant tomato base of this perfectly divine soup. So often are tomato soups overly thick, but not this one with just a touch of cream to balance the flavors perfectly. Top with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and I'm in heaven.
If you haven't been to one of the several "Kitchen" eateries, I can tell you that they are wonderful. Co-owners Hugo Matheson, Kimbal Musk (yes, he's the brother of the other Musk making cool cars & rockets), and Jen Lewin are not only passionate about bringing us amazing culinary delights, but creating "community through food" with their Kitchen Community program which builds Learning Gardens in schools around the country. These engaging outdoor classrooms connect kids to real food, increase academic achievement, and drive community engagement.
